CHINESE PATENT STATISTICS FOR 2017 RELEASED

On January 18th, 2018, State Intellectual Property Office of the P.R.C. held a press conference and released 2017 Chinese patent statistics in Beijing.
In 2017, the number of Chinese invention patent applications was 1,382,000, an increase of 14.2% over the same period of the previous year. A total of 420,000 invention patents were granted, of which 327,000 were domestic invention patents, an increase of 8.2% over the same period of the previous year. In the domestic granted invention patents, service inventions were 304,000, accounting for 92.8%; and non-service inventions were 23,000, accounting for 7.2%.
The top ten domestic enterprises of granted invention patents in 2017 (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) ranked as follows: State Grid Corporation（3,622）, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.(3,293), China Petrochemical Co., Ltd. (2,567), BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. (1,845), ZTE Co., Ltd. (1,699), Lenovo (Beijing) Co., Ltd.（1,454）, Zhuhai Gree Electric Co., Ltd. (1,273), Guangdong Opal Mobile Communication Co., Ltd. (1,222), China National Petroleum Corporation (1,008), Semiconductor Manufacturing International (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (862).
The State Intellectual Property Office received a total of 51,000 PCT international patent applications in 2017, an increase of 12.5% over the same period of the previous year. Among them, 48,000 were submitted by domestic applicants, an increase of 12.5% over the same period of the previous year. 7 provinces (including autonomous regions and municipalities) submitted more than 1,000 PCT international patent applications, namely Guangdong (26,800), Beijing (5100), Jiangsu (4600), Shanghai (2100), Shandong (1700), Zhejiang (1400) and Hubei (1300). The PCT applications submitted by the above seven provinces and municipalities accounted for more than 90% of the total domestic PCT applications.
The total number of patent administrative law enforcement cases nationwide reached 67,000 in 2017, an increase of 36.3% over the same period of the previous year. Among them, there were 28,000 cases of patent disputes (including 27,000 cases of patent infringement disputes), an increase of 35.0% over the same period of the previous year. And 39,000 counterfeit patent cases were investigated, an increase of 37.2% over the same period of the previous year.
The total amount of patent pledged financing in 2017 was 72 billion yuan, an increase of 65% over the same period of the previous year. The number of pledged projects was 4,177, an increase of 60% over the same period of the previous year.
In 2017, the Patent Re-examination Board received a total of 34,123 requests for re-examination, an increase of 160% over the same period of the previous year, and 4,565 requests for invalidation, an increase of 15% over the same period of the previous year.
