SIPO Published Statistics on Patent Applications and Grants in China 2016

On January 19th, 2017, SIPO held a press conference in Beijing to publish the statistics on patent work in 2016.
In 2016, SIPO received a total of 1.339 million invention patent applications, an increase of 21.5%. A total of 404,000 patents were granted. Among them, 302,000 were domestic invention patents, increased by 14.5%. Among the invention patents of domestic applications, 0.276 million were service invention, accounted for 91.4% of the proportion, 26,000 were non-service invention, accounted for 8.6% of the proportion.
The number of PCT international applications that SIPO has received was 45,000, increased by 47.3%, among which 42,200 were filed from China domestic applicant, up 48.5%, and 28,000 applications were filed from abroad applicant, an increase of 31.2%.
In 2016, 48,916 administrative law enforcement cases on patent were handled, up 36.5%. Among which, 20,859 were patent disputes (include 20,351 patent infringement cases) and 28,057 were counterfeit cases, up 42.8% and 32.1% respectively.
The number of requesting for reexamination that the Patent Reexamination Board has received was 13,107 last year and 17,623 cases got closed. As for the number of requests for invalidation that the Patent Reexamination Board has received was 3,969 and 4,100 cases got concluded.
